It seems that due to a change in the law, parents are now held responsible, should their children play truant from school and the officer explains that the authorities will now take her to court, with the strong possibility of her receiving a prison sentence for her daughter’s bad behaviour. Mrs. Williams is mortified and almost lost for words when she hears this and begs Miss Kendle to think of an alternative course of action. The truancy officer, herself a little annoyed at the thought of Felicity escaping any form of punishment, suggests that the only way to avoid court action, is for both mother and daughter to accept corporal punishment from her. Mrs. Williams, terrified by the thought of prison, readily agrees to these terms, much to her daughter’s dismay!
